Songwriting & Production Journey

In my Mind - the process

In My Mind is about unlearning the ideas we absorb when we're young. It's an important song to me.

I first played some chords on the piano - variations of D flat major and A flat major. Then I started singing a melody. I wrote the verse, then the pre-chorus, then the chorus, and finally, the bridge. At that point, the song sounded like the first version you can listen to below.

After about a month, I returned to the song and made the first electronic production of it, which is the second version you can listen to below. The drums are pretty chonky. I cut the bridge down at this point because it was feeling a bit wordy. I just used one of the stock drummers in the Logic drummer track for this version! Logic is the DAW I work in, if you don't know what I'm talking about. If you ever have any questions about anything, feel free to ask!!

After the second version was made, I started doing some research listening to tracks I could use for inspiration. The main one I ended up using was Ribs by Lorde. I made a variation on the vocal "ahhs" that come in and out in her song. I also played around a lot with different drum sounds and settled on some more angular, high-endy sounds that you hear in the final mix. You can listen to what the mix sounded like below before it was mastered (V3)!

Between the 3 versions below there were about 10 different other versions with small edits of various things. I wrote the song in May 2020 and sent it to mastering in October 2020, which I think is one of the shortest turnarounds for any song of mine so far!

Please do let me know if you have any questions about the process, or about the song, or about anything production or songwriting-related! Thank you so much for subscribing and reading - I see you.

When everybody else was at a friend's house I was in this house with you

Whenever you would tell me how to live I would believe your point of view

But now it's 2020 and I can see right through

The versions of me we built without a clue

I am awake

I am alive

We are related but we are not intertwined

On my own terms

In my own time

Crossing lakes and crushing buildings in my mind

I love you and I miss you just the same when we can't reach a common ground

I never want to let you slip away I never want to let you down

But I can't let you stay here, no I can't hang around

Until you let me in

Until you let your guard down

I am awake

I am alive

We are related but we are not intertwined

On my own terms

In my own time

Crossing lakes and crushing buildings in my mind

Been spending time with myself, defining myself, I'm fine with myself.

Been spending time...

Awake, I am alive

We are related but we are not intertwined

On my own terms

In my own time

Crossing lakes and crushing buildings in my mind

In my mind

Drip - the process

Drip is a song about sex. It's a song about sex being messy, and feeling weird because of my needs. It's a song about needing closeness and intimacy. It's a song about enjoying the messiness and goo.

This song has actually been through a lot of versions!!

I initially wrote this song completely without an instrument, lying in bed, and added the chords later. The first version of the song you can listen to below is a cappella.

When I sat down to record it, I created the second version you can listen to below. The rhythm of the verse is a little different, there are slightly different drums (Logic drummer without many edits), and there is quite a bit more vocoder happening. Listening back, there are aspects I like better about this version. What do you think?

The third version is... wild. There's that synth that is trying to be epic, and some really interestingly placed vocal echos... I have no idea what is going on there to be honest.

The last version is the unmastered mix that ended up as the final version! I edited the rhythm of the vocal melody so it fits with the groove of the bass line a bit better, and added some vocals at the end, and slightly different drum sounds!!

And that is the story of how drip came to be.

Lovely days in my bed

Making love without dreading

Feeling lost in the thread of the motion

Darker days, feeling blue

Getting lost, telling you

Letting go when I know we can work through

We can work through the rush

We can work with the touch

We can learn to let go if it's too much

When you're in love with my type of life

A Martian in the light

You might need an appetite

Baby, let me bite you

Wanna know you'll be there when I trip, trip, trip, trip

Want you right over here when I drip, drip, drip

Dripping all over you

Getting covered in goo

Touching tongues with the sweet residue

Fingers trace silky lines

Interlace yours with mine

Make me feel like I might be your kind

My silky smooth might be strange

My need for touch, a wider range

Sometimes bright, sometimes deep

Sometimes going right to sleep

Sometimes need you there to watch me weep
